Douglas Diary Summer Holidays 2018
Cosgrove to Stoke (Bruerne) locks
Last evening, as we had moored up quite early, we all went for a walk around this pretty village. Strangely we had found ourselves moored outside The Barley Mow in Cosgrove but we were on the opposite bank. On our walk we came across the pub’ and we all had a drink I only drink water) and I sat in my usual place under the table. We returned to my long kennel for supper as they wanted to see an episode of The Bodyguard on TV. I was quite happy to have a sleep. I seldom watch TV.
This September morning, Summer continues, there is no wind at all, it is warm and with only a few clouds about ideal for an early morning stroll. It was so still and quiet. My bearded one took the first picture today. I never noticed the heron standing there fishing just a few yards away. Usually they are so timid Seconds later he spotted me and he or she did take off and stood on the other side of the canal, looking at me, this is the other picture he took on his walk this morning.
After breakfast (biscuits dried variety) we decided to leave early as we needed to call at a Marina which was a couple of hours away. It was an opportunity to buy some coal briquettes for our stove, some logs and kindling. I expect we will be needing this fuel soon as autumn approaches. I quite like it when we have an evening by the fire.
We had a picnic lunch on the go and stopped for water at the bottom of Stoke locks. Fortunately, there was another long kennel doing the same thing and we accompanied each other into the flight of 7 locks that were to take us up to Stoke Bruerne. After we had managed 5 of the locks although it was still early, we both decided that was enough for the day and we moored up.
My bearded one painted a picture (I think) and before supper we all went to see The Navigation. This is another pub’ in between lock 6 and 7 just a short walk away. It turns out Mr Marsten lives there. The evening was getting cooler but still managed to sit out by the canal and they had a Hobgoblin and some crisps. I got one.
