Day 10 of our voyage. Weather all sorts. Leigh to Parbold. 8 locks and 12 miles. Total so far 122 miles, 64 locks, 4 tunnels.
This has been an exciting day. I took my bearded one for a lovely early walk in the park by a big lake where we moored last night and I found two friends from the viarama tribe to play with, gosh they are fast.
We cast off after breakfast and immediately had to open a big road lift bridge, this meant holding up streams of traffic although it was Sunday morning. My owners seemed to struggle to get the mechanism working properly whilst the lights flashed and the sirens wailed – quite embarrassing for me.
Quite soon the first locks arrived with the rain! We were approaching Wigan. Once inside the first lock ( a double) they found to their dismay that the locks were secured against vandals and there was nothing my owners could do to fill the lock without a “handcuff key” they pulled on a long rope to get my long kennel back out of the lock again to review the situation whilst it rained They were dripping wet, I just shook myself.
My bearded one read his map at last to be told in the navigation notes that a handcuff key was needed for the next series of locks through Wigan! By a stroke of good fortune my bearded one, after rummaging in his man drawer, found the key and we where on our way albeit a wee bit delayed.
Our plan was to meet up with a friend of our friend Rhylva who happened to live nearby. A pub was chosen, Crooke Hall Inn at Crooke as a rendezvous and I was allowed inside to sit under their table. We were all rather wet. I was a little irritated by some yappy dogs who were not well behaved like me.
After lunch the sun came out and we dried out in the pub garden before saying farewell and continuing on our way through more very large and heavy double locks, lots of walking and exploring for me as this process was rather slow.
I got into a little trouble chasing some creatures I now know are called Canada Geese, I only got a tiny bit wet, I’ll get one one day.
We moored for the night at Parbold. It had started to rain again I went to bed early.
My photos today are: me gazing at the lake on my morning walk, after lunch at Crooke – I am under the table and my long kennel is in the back ground, finally a picture of me on the stern deck.
