Douglas Diary 14th August
Caldon Canal.
With our friends Barbie and Mike safely on board. We peeled off the Trent and Mersey Canal at Stoke on Trent to explore the Caldon Canal. This is new territory for me and them. This canal is a quiet arm off the Trent and Mersey and we are looking forward to exploring its length and lots of walks.
After the first few miles leaving the city we are in beautiful countryside and soon arrived at our second lock interestingly called “planet” where there were some characters, clearly from another one, they were carefully examining the ground around and when gently challenged as to why, we were told they were looking for some cocaine that they had lost! I offered my extremely sensitive and efficient nose but they wouldn’t let me join in.
It was a lovely cruise and I took my long haired one for a super walk and we soon arrived at Cheddleton for our overnight mooring right outside a lovely pub called the “Boat” but also very close to a Victorian railway station, the head of the Churnet Valley Steam Railway! To explore tomorrow, see photo, very exciting.
They had supper in the “Boat” watching an old steam engine trundle up and down. I couldn’t see this from my position under their table. I was generously given a crisp.
