Douglas Diary Summer Holidays 2018
On the Ashby
We were rudely awakened at 0640 when a 70 ft long kennel out of the control of its young and clearly inexperienced crew ploughed into us. My bearded one did his best to explain the errors of their ways.
Today it is threatening rain, overcast and cool but onward we go. I was quite comfortable on the poop deck helping my bearded one navigate. He was all wrapped up – sissy. We hope to join the Ashby Canal today. New territory for all of us.
We woke up this morning moored in the middle of nowhere but not far from Hawkesbury Junction on the North Oxford, we will shortly be joining The Coventry and after a little way further we join the Ashby-de-la-Zouch, to give this short lock free Canal it’s full name, at Marsten Junction. It is apparently a pretty cruise.
It started to rain when we arrived at Hawkesbury Junction and my bearded one decided it was time for a coffee break. This did not take long as the sun peeped out for a few milliseconds and we were on our way again. We turned into the Ashby and made for the first pub stop as we fancied a Saturday evening out – not dog friendly, we cruised for the next one, not dog friendly. This last is at Hinckley. They have no choice, they lit a fire and stayed in my long kennel with me. I will report on the merits of this canal tomorrow. I hope the sun shines. My photo today is what is called Charity Dock, aka junk yard
