Penkridge to Tixall Wide

28/09/2017 Douglas 3 Comments

Well, it rained all night, they had a nice meal at The Boat last night and as I mentioned in my diary of yesterday, there was not much in it for me as I was on guard duty in my Long Kennel.

This morning however, it was potentially a bright and sunny dawn but due to some technical mishap on Peter’s electronic device, it was dark when his alarm prompted him to serve the early morning tea! Like 06:15.? The knock on effect of this was that I took them for their walk before 07:00 and we were all breakfasted and ready for off by 08:00. Way ahead of our normal schedule.

All in all this was a good beginning as my long haired one wanted to explore the still sleeping town of Penkridge.

We filled up with water and then visited one or two shops and admired the olde Gaol complete with the village stocks. Some of us agreed the return of this simple and cheap device would offer a sound and reliable path to the recovery of law and order – where it is wanting. Hey ho.

On our way we lingered en route at bridge 90. Midland Chandlery, my bearded one bought a new bilge pump for my long kennel.

There are four well spaced locks on this stretch of the Staffs and Worcs Canal maybe five miles from first to last and as it is a beautiful day, I am happy to stay on shore and walk with my longhaired one for pretty well the whole distance, blimey, I am quite tired.

We arrived at Tixall Wide and they opened a bottle of red wine.

My photos today, a heron (quite a brave one) and at our mooring in Tixall Wide.

Love Douglas x

Dear Douglas, I have just read your last four diaries. You have been a busy boy and sounds like you have all been having lots of fun. Like you, we have enjoyed good weather, flipping hot really, because of course we lit our fire and put our winter duvet on the bed, phew! We had a fabulous day with you at Chatsworth, it was short and sweet and we miss you all. Would you mind passing on to your bearded one that Mike is now a happy bunny as Nick the engineer came this mid morning and stayed for quite a long time dealing with the battery problems that we have had £500 worth of problems as it happens. If it puts a smile on his face then I am happy. This means that we will move on tomorrow with our destination being Marple. Not that awful mooring we shared a little while ago, hopefully around the corner. Reason being that we will be going on the train to Sheffield to see number three grandson Sam who has just started his studies there and it is the nearest place and has a railway station. Then on Sunday we will move on for our Welsh destination, the Llangollen. Enjoy the good weather before it all goes pear shaped again, much love, licks and scratches, xxx

Dear MickyJay it is always lovely to hear from you. We are tonight in Tixall Wide having had a delightful cruise (due to the weather) from Penkridge. So very pleased for you that your electrics are sorted. I hope we have similar good news soon with my kennel Albert. Everything else us working well, we just cannot use 240 volt outside of the marina link up – not the end of the works but an aggravation particularly on wet hair days!.

Hope you have a super time on the Llangollen – one if my favourite

Lots of love and licks Douglas x

    Hi Douglas –
I love the photo of the heron. So glad to hear Albert has got a new bilge pump: it sounds rather unpleasant to me . . .
Sunny weather still in Eastbourne. Daddy played golf yesterday (he didn’t take me). No sign of Fox the last few days – I think I must have scared him off.
    Love & scratches
    Millie
